How Coaching works

More Than a Training Plan

Great coaching isn’t simply about writing workouts. It’s an ongoing process of understanding, observation, communication, and intelligent decision-making designed to help athletes improve with confidence over time.

Data shows what is happening. Coaching understands why.

Coaching Happens Where You Train

One of the biggest misconceptions about endurance coaching is that a coach needs to stand beside an athlete during every workout. In reality, the most valuable coaching often happens before, during, and after training—not by riding next to you, but by helping you make better decisions over time.

Most athletes I coach live throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, across the United States, and internationally. Coaching is therefore built around where you live, work, and train—not where I happen to be.

Training plans are delivered through TrainingPeaks, but coaching extends far beyond the plan itself. I review key sessions, analyze performance trends, answer questions, adapt training as life changes, and help athletes understand what their data actually means.

Depending on your coaching tier and location, one-on-one sessions—including blood lactate testing, running gait analysis, performance consultations, swim analysis, race strategy meetings, and key training sessions—can also be arranged when appropriate.

Training is something you do.

Coaching is something we do together.

Your Coaching Journey

Every athlete follows the same coaching framework, but no two journeys are identical. Each phase builds on the previous one, creating a coaching experience that continually evolves alongside your fitness, lifestyle, and goals.

01

Understand

Every coaching relationship begins by understanding you—your goals, training history, strengths, limitations, recovery patterns, motivation, and the realities of everyday life.

02

Measure

When appropriate, blood lactate testing, running gait analysis, movement assessments, and training data establish an objective starting point and help guide future decisions.

03

Build

Your training is built around your physiology, available training time, lifestyle, experience, and long-term objectives—not around a generic template.

04

Coach

Training is reviewed continuously through feedback, communication, and performance analysis, allowing coaching decisions to evolve as your training and life evolve.

05

Execute

As race day approaches, attention shifts toward pacing, nutrition, race strategy, recovery, and performing with confidence when it matters most.

06

Evolve

Every training block, race, and setback provides valuable feedback. Together we learn, adapt, and continue building long-term performance.

THE T3 METHOD

Fitness × Attention × Trust

The Coaching Process is guided by the T3 Method—a framework that develops more than physical fitness. It helps athletes understand their training, make better decisions under pressure, and build the confidence to perform consistently over time.

Fitness

Fitness provides the physical capacity to perform, but it is only one part of long-term success. Sustainable performance comes from developing fitness intelligently rather than simply accumulating more training.

Attention

Attention transforms training into learning. Athletes learn to recognize effort, interpret feedback, refine technique, understand fatigue, and make better decisions throughout training and racing.

Trust

Trust grows through consistent communication, thoughtful coaching, and shared experience. It allows athletes to execute with confidence, adapt when circumstances change, and stay committed to long-term development.

The strongest athletes aren’t simply fitter. They’re better at understanding themselves, adapting to challenges, and executing with confidence when it matters most.
