Episode 2 – Training Setbacks and Knee Pain
In this episode, Reggie opens up about one of the toughest stretches in his 70.3 prep so far. Fatigue, overuse, and a painful knee left him struggling to keep up with his training schedule — and even simple walking became difficult.
At this point, he was still self-coached, pushing hard without the balance needed to recover properly. It’s a raw look at the reality many athletes face: training isn’t always exciting, sometimes it’s just plain tough.
Coach’s Perspective
What happened to Reggie is a common trap for self-coached athletes: pushing harder instead of smarter. Without structured training that balances training stress and recovery, the body breaks down rather than builds up.
That being said, there are definitely times in training when we have to “break down to break through.” This follows the principle of systematic overload — applying just the right amount of stress so the body adapts, grows stronger, and moves to the next level. The challenge is knowing how much is enough, and when it’s time to recover.
The key lesson: progress doesn’t come from how much you can endure in one week, but how consistently you can train over months. Progress doesn’t come from one magic workout. There is not a single session that makes you break through and reach the next level. It is the accumulation of hundreds of workouts over many months that creates real improvement. At every level, consistency is achieved and retained through discipline and focus — knowing when to push hard and when to back off. Fatigue management, gradual progression, and smart adjustments are what allow athletes to stay healthy, avoid overuse injuries, and actually get faster.
And let’s be clear: setbacks are part of every athlete’s journey. I’ve never met a single athlete — including in my own career — who didn’t face lows along the way. These tough moments aren’t failures; they’re stepping stones. It’s in the “ugly zone” where growth happens, where we build the belief system that says: I can do this.
This is exactly where guided coaching makes the difference. With the right plan and feedback, setbacks like these can be avoided — turning frustration into sustainable progress.
